My Life: Hurricane Sandy and the Rockaways Queens NY part 2

Salam wa Alaykum folks,

So much is happening. I have been quite busy in the past few days. I heard the subways are starting to fix up around my area which means I can travel out of the Rockaways where I live. No hot water or heat so far but more and more people are finally getting electricity. My neighbor has a considerable amount of pictures and videos and I will soon harass him for all of them to post here.

Here are some of the photos from Hurricane Sandy where I live:

Right up the street. Sand from the Beach washed into the neighborhood.

Large piles of sand block neighbors homes. People's possessions ruined by the flooding are set out as trash.

Boardwalk is blocked with piles of sands. Boardwalk pieces are gathered up near the beach.

Boardwalk is mangled and shifted off route.

From the beach looking out the boardwalk.

Whats left of the boardwalk...the foundation.

Today, all of the sand has been swept up the street and pushed back to the boardwalk. The park is open alhamdoolilah as well. A large group of volunteers went through all the houses and tore up the basement floors which were damaged from the flooding. Things are getting slowly back to normal.

  1. I cant imagine not having heat or hot water. I had to sleep over at my cousins house one summer 4 or 5 years ago and they had no hot water. I had this new hate for cold water. It just hurts and even burns to some extent. I'm sorry about the hurricane, I'm sorry about the people without homes. So how does that work exactly? Do they remain homeless forever? Or do insurance companies or governments help them refix it? Or what happens to families without home insurance? I never understood how America goes about these things.

    1. Wow sis! Im sorry you went through that but it feels good you can empathize haha. Yeah I miss it wallah. There is a lot of help coming from FEMA and other organizations. I think those who have lost everything have been given shelter and maybe hotels. If they dont have insurance I do think they can contact FEMA and as to reclaim damaged property. Its just really haphazard but I think there are definitely some options for them although it cant replace all those possessions and emotional losses.
